We had the pleasure of reviewing the book Papa’s Pearls: A Father’s Gift of Love and Wisdom to His Children and Grandchildren for the Schoolhouse Review Crew this past month.
The author, Diane Flynn Keith is the daughter of Papa. An alternative education specialist Diane is also the author of Carschooling: Over 350 Entertaining Games & Activities To Turn Travel Time Into Learning Time and co-author of two other homeschooling books. An accomplished author and expert in the education she put together Papa’s Pearls to, “share the pearls of wisdom he imparted to his children and grandchildren with many other people.”
Diane began writing down her father’s words of wisdom as she knew his time on the earth was short. Just six months before he passed away, on Father’s Day, she shared the rough draft with him.
A short book, 109 pages, Papas Pearls is just that, pearls of wisdom and fatherly advice through the years from the author’s father.
Born during the Roaring 20′s he grew up in the struggles of the Depression. Papa learned from the school of hard knocks.
Papa’s Pearls is 17 chapters of wisdom for everyday living. The chapters have titles such as When You Fall Down – Get Back Up, Brush Yourself Off, and Try Again! and I Am So Grateful I Have a Wonderful Family – There Are No Kook-A-Loonies. Each chapter, is full of little anecdotes from Papa’s life and how he came up with his little sayings.
“I love you. You know that, right?”
The book costs $21.97 which includes shipping and an autograph by the author. Or you can purchase it on Amazon.
I read this book to myself but my husband is on track to read it himself. I can also see myself sharing bits of it with our daughter. She will enjoy the short stories of life in a time before her own (she always does).
I don’t think there is anything not to like about this book. They are the fond memories of a daughter for her father and I’m sure many of them will give parents and idea or two about helping their own children grow into responsible adults.
