Seventh Generation “Project Laundry Line” Giveaway

The Giveaway is now closed.  Winner update post here.

Thank you to all the participants.

In this era of cutting costs and going green Seventh Generation has a timely challenge my family is excited to participate in.

The steps are switching cold water washing and  line drying our laundry.

The aim of this challenge is two-fold; environmental savings and wallet savings. My husband is excited about the latter.

I’ve had to, for lack of an electric dryer, line dry my clothing in the past. I never thought it much more than a hinderance. This is the first time I’m choosing to line dry even with the convenience of a dryer.

To help encourage this line drying stuff Seventh Generation has provided me (and will provide one of my lucky readers) with a Project Laundry Line kit.

Seventh Generation Natural 2x Concentrated Laundry Liquid (good for 66 loads of laundry)

A portable laundry line (this thing is huge!)

A package of clothes pins

And a laundry basket

I’ll be posting weekly or so about how it’s going and when we get our bill if we’ve seen a nice drop in the amount.

For the record I was already a Seventh Generation Laundry soap user. I use lot’s of different laundry detergents and even some I’ve whipped up myself. In my regular rotation is Seventh Generation, Method, and LeBlanc Linen Wash

For now though let’s get with the giveaway details.

My husband has installed a solar water heater and we hang our laundry out on the line to dry. We have installed cf lightbulbs in all of our light fixtures. We are also using wood cook stove and water heater in the winter. These changes have cut our electric bill to 40% of what it was!

Posted about your giveaway here (since I don’t have a personal blog…I share one with my family; but I figured this forum gets much more traffic than my family blog!):

My home had a laundry line in the basement. We never used it because our basement got wet too often. I did dry on the porch a few times. that was nice and no one could see.

  • love summer time and hanging clothes out to dry I enjoy my freshly washed linens the best

I’ve line dried in the past. Our house already had an outdoor line when we moved in. I would let my toddler get his daily dose of sunshine while I was hanging. Then we moved, to an apartment and the only “line” drying I did was the cloth diapers. (Ahhh, the bleaching power of sunlight) Now that we’ve moved, again, I’ve line dried indoors during the winter, but haven’t gotten around to installing an outdoor line.
One way I save money and landfills is using less disposable items. We cloth diaper, use kitchen towels instead of paper towels, reuse my husband’s no longer needed printouts from work for the kids’ multitudinous artwork. We love yard and rummage sales and I enjoy refashioning clothing for a new life. We’ve started composting and are expanding on that.

I have been drying my clothes outside by choice, i have a working dryer, for a very long time, i dont have a line so i use my fence to dry them, i use cloth diapers instead of disposables. i also help my kids take there old papers and recycle them into new paper for drawings and school projects. Also when the crayons become just bits and pieces broken up we melt them back down into new usable crayons. As far as cleaning goes we use homemade mixtures for almost everything in the house, using vinegar and baking soda to clean most everything. We also grow some vegtebles for canning and can our own apple juice and apple sauce, and our own jams and jellys. I also make most of our clothing as i find it a lot less cost then buying new ones, As far as most of the breads we eat, dinner rolls, white bread, biscuits, i make all from scratch as it is more cost efficiant to do so.

We don’t dry our clothes outside, but I think using a portable laundry line would help. I didn’t know there was such a thing! We cut costs by growing our own veggies, using coupons, and watching what our air conditioning is set at! I also am careful to shop our local grocery store ads, what we eat depends on what is on sale.

  • Naomi:

I have been using cold water to wash clothes for many years. I started line drying again when I lost my job this past May. I have also been watching what we eat and scaling down the meal size to what we actually eat. I have also been batch cooking then freezing. I purchase more of the BOGO at the grocery store and using coupons. I noticed also you never have to use the amount of detergent and other chemical that is on the container. I have been experimenting with what amount will actually do the job. Therefore, taking longer to use it up. I also do not use lights until well after dark. We are reading more and spending better quality time together. We are also in the process of making a garden to use year around as we are in Florida.

  • Stacie:

We have cold water washed now for months, and we line dry indoors and are slowly getting our outdoor lines done. Looking for right location and cementing a pole. :) We also make our own laundry detergent, sorry Seventh Generation, but we would love to give you a try! We also make our own shampoo!!

  • Judy:

I cook from scratch, use rags instead of paper towels, make some of my own cleaners, and water with rainwater (collected in our 2 rain barrels). I have made my own laundry detergent in the past, but would love to try the 7th Generation product.

  • Adrienne Larkin:

I have been using the cold water wash more often and hang drying as much as our tiny place can hold.

  • Julie:

I use those dryer balls. They say they cut the drying time in half – not too sure about that. I’ve been dying to try the Seventh Generation products!:)

  • I try and watch how low we set our air conditioner, we are growing our own fruits and we are also recycling more….it is all fun too!

  • Bao:

I live in Seattle so (1) it is rarely possible to line dry things because it is always raining…but (2) it is fairly easy being green as the city/county makes it very conducive for folks to recycle, compost, and be generally more environmentally conscious. We carpool, use public transportation, use energy-efficient appliances, pack up the dishwasher, use cloth diaper, etc. We are a frugal family…but it is often more difficult to go beyond being frugal and think about the kind of environment we want to leave behind for our children. Thank you for this giveaway & the reminder to be kinder to our earth!

  • Lollie:

I don’t line dry clothes regularly, but to lower bills and cut costs in the home most of the food we eat is prepared at home from scratch, we turn off lights when we are not using them, we regularly use coupons when we shop and we always look for deals, we shop at Costco to buy items in bulk when we can (dish washing detergent, fabric softener, some meat items, etc.), we do our own hair (I learned how to be a barber many years ago and I do my own hair), and I’ve learned how to stretch a bottle of Palmolive dishwashing detergent by diluting it. It still suds wonderfully after being diluted with ten times as much water. Thank you for offering such a nice giveaway on your site.

  • I love to dry laundry outdoors. I am a busy farmwife and the only things that keep me from drying outside all of the time are the flies and the road dust – I never thought of hanging the line in my garage! I may give it a try.
